The Quirky Art Movement

"Quirky" is the name I have given a style of art which aims to place prominence on the depiction of an item that already exists, but is portrayed in an emphasised way.

Quirky art can be described as being a subsection of the Figurative Art movement in that it depicts a thing that already exists. However, there it moves on from figurative art in that it depicts a thing already in existence but in a quirky and unusual style. An emphasis is placed on an aspect of the thing, or on the thing itself, and it is this emphasis that makes it quirky. It could also accurately be described as an interpretation of a thing that doesn’t go as far as abstraction. It still retains its obvious shape but depicts it in an emphasized way. That is, that by looking at it, it is clear what it is, whereas abstraction determines that what it is, isn’t always obvious.

The Quirky movement encapsulates freedom of form and juxtaposes it with the restriction of that form. It makes for a challenging and exciting workspace for the artist and an invigorating and pleasing spectacle for the viewer.
